Gratis guidad tur i Gamla Stan/Free guided tour in The Old Town

Aurore och jag läste om en gratis guidad tur i Gamla Stan och allt som är gratis är bra - trodde vi! Ur plånbokssynpunkt ja men.....

Vi samlades vid Obelisken framför Storkyrkan i Gamla stan. Vädret var blåsigt och kallt. Till en början var vi de klart yngsta deltagarna i denna tur. I övrigt 65+.

Guiden kom efter en stunds väntande och var, till del, iklädd kläder man bar under kanske 14-1500-talen.

Han tillhör ett sällskap som hade till uppgift att stärka intresset för Gamla Stan och dess historia både i då- och nutid.

Inledningsvis konstaterade han att obelisken var den högsta punkten vid tidpunkten för dess tillkomst och att alla gatunummer utgår från denna eller slottet (Obelisken är 22 meter hög och byggdes av Gustav III 1788-90, något han inte upplyste oss om).
Informationen om husnumren kanske inte var särdeles unik men uppenbarligen var det ett antal av de församlade som inte kände till detta (att husnumren utgår från obelisken/slottet).

Vissa av de äldre i sällskapet klagade ideligen på att de inte hörde vad som sades och till del berodde det säkert på hörselnedsättning men guidens sätt att tala till oss var inte heller särdeles professionellt.
Dels tittade han ofta ned i papperen dels vände han sig bort när han skulle förevisa något vi alla skulle fokusera på.

Han betonade att detta var första gången han genomförde en guidad tur - och det märktes...!

I Storkyrkan fortsatte några att klaga på att de inte hörde vad som sades och ett par-tre damer och en herre lämnade sällskapet.
Det var dock svårt att tala högt i kyrkan varför detta kanske inte kan lastas honom.

Den information vi erhöll var inte heller här särdeles originell och efter en introduktion lät han oss gå fritt runt i kyrkan utan att själv säga ett ord.
Han nämnde inte det s.k. 'Silveraltaret', 'S:t Göran och Draken' (Bernt Notke), Ehrenstrahls stora målningar 'Korsfästelsen' och 'Yttersta domen' etc. etc.
Däremot skulle vi titta på ett antal gravar och gravkapell!

På vägen ut klagade kyrkvaktmästaren på att vår guide och hans medarbetare (som höll sig lite för sig själva) inte hade betalt den avgift man skall betala om man skall guida i kyrkan, varför en av dem blev kvar för att 'förhandla'.

Vi kom så till Stortorget där han började tala om Börshuset (copyright fotolänken www.nobelmuseum.se) som han dock inte helt exakt kunde datera.

Nobelmuseet nämndes och att Svenska Akademien har sina möten i denna byggnad.

Inte heller det ny eller ovanlig information.

'Stockholms blodbad' kom att nämnas men även här var han osäker på dateringen: "Någon gång på 1500-talet..." som han uttryckte det (1520 för att vara exakt).

Han vände sig bort från oss då han talade och valde att tala rakt in i en gran!
Visserligen talade Franciscus av Assisi till fåglarna men här var det väl ändå den grupp som utgjordes av oss församlade som skulle utgöra fokus, inte granen, eller...?

Vid omnämnandet av antalet avrättade vid Stockholms blodbad, vände han sig mot ett hus och gjorde gällande att de stenar som fanns på vissa ställen på fasaden indikerade hur många som dött.
Problemet var endast att han vände sig mot fel hus och en i gruppen var tvungen att fråga - pekandes på en annan byggnad - om det inte var detta hus som åsyftades. "Jo, det är riktigt..."! svarade vår förvirrade guide.
Efter Stortorget skulle vi gå till Tyska kyrkan (S:ta Gertruds kyrka) men uppenbarligen var han inte så väl orienterad utan tog oss med på en omväg till kyrkan.
Väl framme kunde han endast tala om att här hade tyskar arbetat och haft en marknad en gång i tiden och att det var tyska köpmän som bekostat byggandet av kyrkan. Tänk så underligt!!
Han började också slita i fel dörr då vi skulle in varvid jag var tvungen påpeka att ingången låg på andra sidan! "Ja, det vet jag!", svarade han. Jaha!
Inne i kyrkan lämnades vi åt våra egna funderingar kring smått och stort.

Härifrån tog vi oss i långsamt tempo till Köpmangatans slut där vi finner den 'andra' statyn föreställandes S:t Göran och Draken.
För det första nämner guiden först då vi lämnat Köpmangatan att den är Gamla Stans äldsta dokumenterade gata.
För det andra: Inte ett ord om att statyn föreställandes kampen mellan S:t Göran och Draken, har kommit att symbolisera kampen mellan inte endast ondskan och godheten utan kampen mellan danskar och svenskar.
Han visste inte heller att det var Bernt Notke som skapat denna staty. Detta visste dock Aurore! Kanske skulle hon guidat.

Efter detta skulle vi till det initialt omnämnda café där han och hans grupp skulle bjuda på kaffe.
Alla deltagare såg självfallet fram emot detta och såg framför sig något av Gamla Stans mysiga caféer som Sundbergs exempelvis men nej: Seven Eleven!

Slutbetyg kring denna guidning och allt runt omkring kan sammanfattas i KATASTROF!

Detta försök kan knappast leda till ett större intresse för Gamla stan och dess historia eller för svensk guidning överhuvud.
Det finns nu duktiga guider i Gamla stan och på andra platser i Stockholm som kan detta med guidning.
Dessa guidade turer kostar pengar men det kanske kan vara värt att betala de mellan 50-80:- för att få en auktoriserad och kompetent guide istället för att betala ingenting för ingenting.

Aurore and I saw an advertisement concerning a free guided tour in the Old Town in Stockholm. Everything that is free is good, we reasoned - but no! From an economic point of view: Yes but...!

We gathered around the obelisk (photo copyright the obelisk, http://z.about.com) in front of the cathedral. We were around 20-25 people. It was windy and cold and most of the people where +65 years old. Initially we where the youngest.

When the guide finally arrived, he was partly dressed in old clothes from the sixteenth or fifteenth century.
He started of by telling us that he was a member of a society that wanted to increase the interest for the Old Town and it's history.
This was an attempt or should we say 'experiment' from their side to see if there where any interest for this kind of guided tours.

There are however already many guided tours in Stockholm by authorized guides, the Old Town not excluded.
We where to become the guinea pigs! Really - we where!

At a sign we had read: "English free guided tours", but he spoke Swedish all the time! False marketing.

The tour started with him telling us that this obelisk was for a long historical time the highest point in Stockholm (22 meters) and that all the numbers on the different streets in Stockholm, take their starting point here.
Most of us know this.
Inside the Cathedral (photo copyright www.objectif-suede.com) he didn't tell us much and he neither talked about the so called 'Silver altar' made in Hamburg, the statue 'S:t George and the Dragon' made by Bernt Notke nor the giant painting 'The Last Judgement' by Ehrenstrahl.
He only pointed out some tombs that we could take a look at ourselfs. Many of the elderly people who earlier had complaints on not being able to hear what he said now left the group. This because inside the church he was obliged to talk in a even lower voice.

After this we went to 'Stortorget', the old market square in the Old Town and the place where the 'Stockholm bloodbath'..... took place.
Arriving here the guide told some more or less uninteresting facts we already knew about the former Stock Exchange building where today the Swedish Academy resides and where the Nobel musuem is situated.

The guide couldn't tell us in what year the bloodbath in Stockholm took place (1520) and when he talked he turned himself towards and seemed do address a big spruce, functioning as a Christmas tree during the Christmas markets in the Old Town.
I know that Francis of Assisi spook to the birds but in this case I thought that the group (the 'birds') not the tree was the focus of our guide. Obviously I was wrong.

He also told us about a house where one could see stones in the facade indicating how many people where killed during the bloodbath.
The problem was that he pointed out the wrong building! One of the members of the group had to point at the right building, asking him if he didn't have that one in mind, whereby he said! "Oh, yes that's right..." as if he knew what he was talking about!

A walk to the German Church - S:ta Gertrude - that took us more time than was necessary because he couldn't find his way.
Finally arriving he told us things that we already knew or at least could have imagined ourselves. He started to tug and jerk at the wrong door and I had to tell him that we had to go to the other side of the church where the entrance actually where. "Of course", he said, again pretending as if he knew that he had tried the wrong door. Inside the church we were left to our thoughts and meditations.


After this we came to the other statue depicting S:t George and the Dragon and the princess, the original of which there is an exact replica in the dome.
He didn't know the name of the artist - Bernt Notke - and he didn't know that besides depicting the struggle between good and evil, in Swedish context at the time it also depicted the struggle between Denmark and Sweden. Aurore knew this!
He didn't talk about the prehistory or original tale of this event either!

After this we all awaited the promised visit at a nice café in the Old Town where they were going to invite us all, having some coffee! There are many nice cafées in the Old Town but they had chosen - SevenEleven! My Good! Save me! This was not what we expected.

The summary of this guided tour is: CATASTROPHY!

This guide tour will by no means increase the interest for the Old Town and besides, there are many guided tours with authorized guides in the Old Town and judging from this it's probably better to pay between 6-9 euros for a competent guide, than paying nothing for nothing!
