Headbanging

After a short shopping 'interlude', Gunnar and I go to our two regular vernissages near Södermalmstorg at Galleri Helle and Galleri Kontrast.

At Galleri Helle, some of the students of the Graphic School are exhibiting some works.

We recognize Hanna Gustavsson (21 y.o) immediately. We saw her work somewhere else before - SAK, Millesgården?
In black and white, she draws surrealistic portraits of everyday people.
They live in the suburb, buy alcohol on Fridays, watch Rickie Lake's TV program, use internet to underleaf their libido.
One of them is an angry young man sitting in a coach with a black metal t-shirt.
He looks mad, staring in front of him towards what we guees is the TV (is that Lake's fault? or Beavis and Butthead?).
He will be the key character of this day.

It might have been a tribute to Ragnar Persson, the artist who depicts with the same kind of technique the surrealistic darkness of Scandinavia and who presently has a small exhibition at Hedengrens. Who knows...

I (Gunnar) would like to add Anna Johansson Stenberg and her art, a combination between photos, drawings - some kind of collage.

I liked it very much and it reminded me to some extent of family photos on the wall in a old home in Sweden or any other country.
The photos function there as historical documents not only of the persons we know but also of old milieus, living conditions and maybe earlier unspoiled nature.

Then, Galleri Kontrast with some pictures from Northern Norway, where Russian and Ukrainian immigrants work in the mine. They live in kitsch interiors and as in Gustavsson's drawings, we experience this as a kind of surrealistic portraits.

I (Gunnar) felt very much as if these immigrants had to put up with interiors that we in the West had left behind us as being ugly or out of fashion.
This strengthens the feeling that these people are going throw the development we went through in society thirty years ago.

But let's go back to headbanging.

Direction: Opera!

The mise en scène is made by a Norwegian citizen - Olle Anders Tandberg.
As Norway is the country for Mayhem, Nattefrost or Immortal (resurrected), when the two lead characters exchange identities and use long hair postiches to embody new roles, Peter Mattei starts headbanging during some seconds.
Headbanging at the Opera! On Mozart's music! I was delighted!

I (Gunnar) think that when it comes to the performance by the singers in this production, Peter Mattei (Guglielmo, see link by his name above) was fantastic vocally and comically.
He is one of our foremost singers all categories and his baritone both has a deep and soft timbre combined with vocal strenght when needed.

Maria Fontosh (Fiordiligi) is one of my favourites among the sopranos but in this performance I where not as impressed as I have been before when hearing her sing.
I saw her in 'Eugen Onegin' and there she was tremendous sometimes reminding me of the greatest singers ever. In this performance she was very good but maybe I have to high demands on her as I fell in love with her voice immediately the first time I heard her.

Susanna Végh is also one of my favourites among singers and she sang very well though I found her performance in the last act being better than in the first.

The least interesting singers vocally where Hilde Leiland (Despina), Jonas Degerfeldt (Ferrando) and Gunnar Lundberg (Don Alfonso).

On a whole this production held high standards and I liked the mis en scène very much. The choir where excellent and also the orchestra conducted by the excellent Finnish conductor Okko Kamu.
I recommend this production to all of you.

We achieved the day with some other headbangers from Northern Europe.

On s'amuse, on pleure, on rit,

Eurovision Song Contest from Helsinki. We hear the 24 participants.
But I am waiting for something: Apocalyptica is playing during the break.
Gunnar has never heard of them, never seen them. I will have to make him listen to their tributes I keep in La Châtre.

Exhibitions, Opera, TV. Everything was under the sign of headbanging in a kitsch, surreal world.
Could it have been better? Hardly.

Crèpes/Galettes/Semlor

Svenska (English below):

Gentilt må man säga!
English:

The day starts with me baking crêpe/Galettes.
When it comes to crêpes and pancakes this is the only dishes I 'manage' to do or like doing myself.
Otherwise I am not interested in cooking and I don't need to be as I have a wonderful cook in Aurore who found a recipy at Marmiton.org.

After finishing this we left the house, going 'downtown' (city) to look at an exhibition at the 'Gallery Kontrast' where works of several press photographers are exhibited in connection to the comptetion 'The Photo of the Year'.

We found some interesting and moving photos both tematically and aesthetically but on the whole we where not impressed.

We now tried to find a café for a cup of coffee but it seems as if every 'stockholmer' was out doing the same and after one hour we gave up and, against our will, choosed a Seven Eleven store.

After this we go by metro and bus to Audrey where we meet Xavière for the first time, a French woman living in Sweden since August last year.
She speaks an excellent Swedish in spite of never having studied the language, as with Aurore.
We began with the crêpes, continued with waffels and ended it all with a 'small' dessert consisting of home made cream buns (semla). To this we drank cider från Normandie.

A very nice evening with interesting conversations and laughters!
Xavière was nice enough to give us a ride home in her car, in spite of her living in another municipality in the Stockholm area.

Johannes church, 'Livet med tiden', Damaskus

Svenska (English below):

Kyrkan stod färdig 1890 men man tillhörde då Jakobs församling.

I övrigt intressant.

Solister. Ett par orgelverk framfördes också. En vacker, jämn klang på denna kör.
En fin avslutning på dagen.

Hem och middag.

English:

The Chinese New Year's Day! Yesterday we celebrated New Year's Eve. The Year of the Pig.

We began with a church service in Johannes church (Wikipedia in Swedish: S:t John's church) with a somewhat special service today.
We celebrated that it's exactly one hundred years since this church became a parish of its own. Before this it belonged to S:t Jakob's parish.
The church was built and inaugurated in 1890 in New Gothic Style but it became a parish in 1907.

The bishop of Stockholm, Caroline Krook and the vicar Per Qvarnström, lead the service and several other clergymen assisted them. Music by S:t Johannes chamber choir and musicians from The Royal Court Orchestra.

In this church I once - fifteen years ago maybe - sang for the smallest amount of people I have ever sung: Eleven. That included the clergyman, my mother, the organist, choir leader, the church janitor some other representative for the church and four visitors. It felt a bit lonely as the church holds more than seven hundred people.

Met a young woman I came to know from my time in S:t Clara church, a woman who lived in my apartment for a while when she was looking for an apartment of her own in Stockholm, during her studies at Stockholm University.
She studied linguistics at the time and later on literature.
Today she came with her fiancé and after the church we went to the French school for a gathering.
Her fiancée told us that he had been a student there. He graduated and got his high-school diploma three years ago. Spoke French of course, as most cultivated people!?
They did not stay and neither did we.

Aurore and I went to a café and after that Gallery Kontrast and a photo exhibition with pictures by Elisabeth Olsson Wallin.called 'Livet med tiden' ('Life in time', my translation).
Olsson Wallin became well known and very much discussed in connection to an exhibition a couple of years ago called 'Ecce Homo', where she had created photos depicting homo-, bi-, and trans sexuals in different 'biblical' situations, like The Last Supper, a Pietà and so forth.
The persons in the pictures then were naked or almost naked alternatively dressed in masochist clothing and alike.
This upset a lot of Christians and others in our country. She argued that these people were a part of all those outcasts that Jesus really cared about.
This exhibition depicts elderly persons with different life stories living in Sweden but not necessarily born here.
There are also photos in the photos depicting them as young men and women. These photos are exposed in different ways as you can see from the photos above. A text telling us a little about the different persons was also included.

From this exhibition to another: The StockholmCity Museum and Johan Hagelbäck (Johan Hagelbäck on IMDb), an artist who has made pieces of art by using raisins.
They serve as different commentaries on our society and use denominations being made out of the original names turned into a more 'raisin'-like form (ex: Raisinda instead of Råsunda)
An entertaining exhibition, not least for children or younger people who could manipulate the artworks to some extent by pressing buttons that made the raisins move "in mysterious ways".

From raisins to a conversation around Jesus as Paul.
In Ersta church there is once a week a conversation between two or more persons - 'Ersta talks' ('Ersta samtal') - discussing some topic often dealing with philosphy of life.

This afternoon the scientist and author Lena Einhorn was invited to discuss her book 'What happened on the road to Damascus?' (my translation) refering to the revelation S:t Paul had on his way to Damascus when he according to the Bible converted to Christianity.

Her thesis - though not entirely new - is that Paul actually was Jesus.
I haven't read the book so I can't go into details concerning the content and her way of reasoning but the main theory is that Jesus never died on the cross but was taken down before death occured. He was treated by physicians of the time and when he recovered he fled to Syria and we now meet him again in the 'guise' of Paul.

Theories concerning Jesus' death have been prevalent since the early Christian time trying to explain that the man the disciples met was not the resurrected Jesus but a Jesus who never died.

Partly new is the theory that Paul in fact is Jesus continuing his work among 'non-believers'.
Paul is also sometimes called the first theologian in Christianity.

Einhorn argues that Jesus and Paul's parables and way of preaching bear great affinity.

Her discussion partner, Per Block, is one of my former teachers from Uppsala university and the Theological Faculty where he taught Interpretation (Exegesis) of New Testament Theology.

The problem was that some people in the audience did not have the patience listening to them both and their arguments.
It seemed as if they thought this was only a presentation of the book by the author and not a discussion between two people of different opinions.
This was extremely disturbing and I felt like throwing some of them out.
There is always a problem with people who prefer easy explanations - either black or white - and not thorough discussions around interesting theories and ideas.

In spite of the interruptions Aurore and I found it quite an interesting afternoon. A book like this also increases the interest around questions of belief and what we can believe in and why we believe the things we do and so forth.

We concluded the day in Hedvig Eleonora church (Wikipedia in Swedish about Hedvig Eleonora church) with the Chamber choir singing works by Francis Poulenc, August Söderman and Otto Olsson including a couple of organ pieces.

Adolf Fredriks Church, Christer Strömholm and Pan's Labyrinth

Svenska (English below):

Swallow it (Svälj) from Silverosa Film on Vimeo.

English:

We start this Sunday - as almost all Sundays - with a church service, this day in Adolf Fredriks church situated almost in the center of Stockholm .
Named after a king in the 18th Century and with the former prime minister Olof Palme's (murdered in 1986) tomb on the cemetery.

'Sunday of Reformation' ('Reformation Sunday') this day is called in Swedish but the more correct name is the latin 'Sexagesima'.

I show Aurore a book depicting people in an organisation called 'New Fellowship'.
This organisation was first founded in the late sixties, inviting lonely people without families to celebrate Christmas and other major holidays together with others.
They arranged all kinds of activities and most of the work were carried out by volunteers.
For many years now most of the people coming to this 'fellowship' are homeless people with a drug- and alcohol addiction. This was not the case in the beginning. I have myself during my time as an assistant priest in S.t Clara church in Stockholm, worked as a volunteer within this organisation.

After this we continue to a gallery called 'Kontrast' where there is an exhibition with photos by the famous Swedish photographer Christer Strömholm.
Some of these photos I've already seen two years ago at an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art when some of his photos were exhibited together with photos by Diane Arbus and Lisette Model.

Gallery of Comics (my translation of 'Seriegalleriet') is our next stop.
They exhibit some comic strips and drawings by the well known Swedish comic strip-artist Leif Zetterling displaying his satirical comments on current political affairs both in and out of Sweden. Other well known artists of comic magazines are also displayed.

From here we went on to Högalids church (information on Wikipedia concerning the district/borough where this church is situated) for a 'salon'-concert with the chamber choir, a soloist and a pianist. They called it 'Nonsens, Serenades and Songs'.

Cinema Zita and the short film 'Svälj'/'Swallow' (my translation) describing Sweden far from the secure, social welfare state Swedes and others often depict it as. Nothing new but some of the personal portraits of individuals were interesting and touching.

This film was presented within the framework of a a serie called 'Short and free' ('Kort och gratis' in Swedish) at cinema Zita. Unfortunately this serie where people have been able to look at short films for free is now closing down because of lack of money.

The day ends with 'Pan's labyrinth' ('El Laberinte del Fauno') by Guillermo Del Toro, the story about a young girl living alone with her mother since her father died.
Her mother is now going to be remarried to a fascist Captain in the army of generalissimo Franco during the Second world War.

The young girl escapes in her imagination to a world inhabitated by fauns and other fantastic creatures.
The faun tells her that she actually is a princess and if she dosn't fail the tests he is going to subject her to, she will be able to regain her status as a princess and live forever. Is she imagining or not?

In 'the other' world/real(?) world, her stepfather hunts and kills people from the resisting movement and parallells to Irak is of course obvious.
Her mother dies when giving birth to a son.

This film was given very good reviews both in Sweden and elsewhere but I can't say I am impressed.
It's hard to relate to the young girl as she is acting without any emotional expression in her face, it's almost as watching Patricia Arquette (when acting in the series 'Medium').

The connection with the war in Iraq is obvious or even overexplicit.

On the whole, not at all a bad film, but not at all the magnificent œuvre the reviews indicated.
