Summer Sale 2007

Saturday, we do something crazy: summer sale for the kitchen.

First, one Kenwood kind-of-mixer (to make banana milkshake the same evening) and a waffel form (Gunnar's obsession).
370 skr spent on one day. Summer sale's victims!

Sweet Dreams

First night in our new home. Very peaceful. Very enjoyable!

We had a kind of pick nick instead of a decent dinner but I promise everything will go better as soon as the fridge is full.

I send a letter to the tax office today to communicate my new secret address.

We borrowed our neighbour's vacuum cleaner to tidy up the bed(room).

They were very nice according to Gunnar - I was too exhausted to be social last night.

More to come!

Home Sweet Home

Yesterday, tuesday, I met my landlady to get the keys of the new flat in which we are moving in.

Gunnar fixed a truck to move our stuff and today, he did everything by himself... Well, of course, he was helped by 2 guys, but he managed the rest.
We had started to pack last night and went on this morning (woke up at 6).

For about 2 weeks I, Aurore, will be the redactor on this blog.

To get a new home means to get a new internet connection, and as we were not that excited about going on with Telia, we ordered a new connection.
And as in most of the countries, it means that we have to wait a fortnight to be connected to the rest of the world again.

You can guess that I am not that pleased to use my office computer to do this. First, I don't have much time and second, I don't want to get paid to do private stuff.

We will spread some pictures as soon as my notebook is back on the web.

I am very excited about going home after my day!!

Bambi had come to say goodbye...

Aurore is working nine till six (not 'nine till five') at Dfm Fiktion while I spend another four or five hours at the Swedish Film Institute before going to the Cultural Center ('Kulturhuset') for a photo exhibition called 'The Roma Journeys'.

This is an exhibition about the life of the Romani people all over the world trying to illuminate their situation in different countries around the globe.

The photographer behind this exhibition is Danish and his name is Joakim Eskildsen.
In connection to each and every series of photos from the different countries there are information sheets telling us something about the situation under which the Romani people live in these countries.

Contract

Svenska:

English:

Aurore is working her 'rass' at Dfm Fiktion today and meanwhile I meet another woman!!
It's alright, Aurore knows who it is and there is no drama behind.

This friend of mine is going to Germany where she is going to meet her relatives who all live in different cities around the country. I wave her off by the bus to Skavsta airport.

After this I continue to the Swedish Film Institute where I stay for some hours.

In the evening we meet Annelie, the young woman who's appartment we sublet. We are going to sign the contract. Yipeee!!

We have been waiting for this for a long time now.
Annelie seems to be a reliable person why we are very happy to have found this appartment and her as holding the leasen.

Sound Pollution, The Sharpnotes & Maxi Dread

Svenska:

(Copyright: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/86/256166061_a78624fac2.jpg)

'The Sharpnotes & Maxi Dread'

English:

Aurore spend a couple of hours this Saturday to film in different theoretical forms and I read and look through a pile of papers that have been lying unattended for a while.

Later we go in to town and Mariatorget ('Maria square') where we visit Café Chic for a cup of coffee with Danish pastry with strawberries on. Good pastry and coffee at café Chic and it's seldom the coffee is good at cafées in Stockholm (and elsewhere).

Next stop is the record store Sound Pollution in the Old Town where I look at everything and nothing while Aurore searches a spcecial vinyl record. She does not find it and there are not an excessively big number of vinyls in this store.

We stroll on in the sun and arrive to 'Kungsträdgården' where 'The Sharpnotes & Maxi Dread' is playing blues. This performance where however not good I am afraid. It sounded a bit like when you at high school tries different music innstruments and styles to find one that suites you.

We prefered to continue our stroll towards Djurgården and a small grocery shop opposite Skansen where they sell the so called 'Djurgårds-ice cream'.
They are very tasty and cheaper than when you buy ice-cream down town.

After enjoying the ice cream and a walk in the sun we continued towards what is called 'The Oak' nearby the cemetery where they every summer plays theatre.

The Park Theatre tonight gave a show called 'Tango according to Schopenhauer' with texts by him and music and text by others. It is performed by the actorGerhard Hoberstorfer, Leif Jordansson, guitar and Micke Augustsson, bandoneon.

We left after the first song as Hoberstorfer neither can sing or interpret the song in such a way that it affects us. The musicians where excellent but some actors should keep away from the music as many musicians should stay away from film.

We went back to Kungsträdgården to sit down and enjoy the sun before returning home to dine.

Volpone - review

Svenska:

English:

Volpone, a play by Ben Johnson is the main event today.

It's performed in a well known park in Stockholm ('Vitabergsparken') by the 'Park theatre' a section of the Municipal theatre that every summer performs on out door stages for free.

Ben Johnson was born 1572 and died in 1637 and hereby contemporary with William Shakespeare.
According to what we know today, it's relatively obvious that they met at some occasions.
This as Johnson among other things refers to Shakespeare and comments on his work.
Shakespeare's company is also said to have performed some of Jonsons plays and Shakespeare is said to have acted in at least one of them.

Johnson where obviously the more cultivated of the two but Shakespeare where the more witty.

If I don't remember incorrectly (which I very well may do) there were theories stating that Johnson had written most of the plays that was ascribed to Shakespeare. However I don't know this in detail and might be wrong.

Jonson wrote a great number of plays, dramas and poetry but the most famous plays is perhaps 'Volpone' and 'The Alchemist'.

'Volpone' is a play about a Venetian citizen and imposter, Volpone. He is living and flourishing thanks to all the precious gifts he receives from the propertied people in the city, people he swindles by claiming he is dying and making them believe that they are going to inherit him.

Volpones 'factotum' Mosca assist him and constitute his contact with the surrounding world, making the rich give the 'poor', 'sick' Volpone money and other treasures.

Everything is very schematic performed as a 'number revue'(?) and the acting is caricature like but to rough accordning to me. There are no nuances.
Even though the play was meant to draw caricatures of the persons involved in the play and also considering that the audience (17th Century) might have been dependant on grand gestures I do believe that the small nuances also where important.

The clothes and masks are however very ingenious and it makes me think of the opera 'Le Grand Macabre' by Györgi Ligeti first time performed at The Royal Opera house in Stockholm in 1978 in which the costumes played an important rôle.

I - Gunnar - devote myself to mowing the lawn that have grown in such a rapid pace that own might think we used something like 'Substral' (nourishment for plants). We thought for a short while that maybe it would be better to transform our garden into a jungle adventure park but we did not. With a effective lawn mower that I lended from one of our neighbours, I managed to make the lawn look quite good.

In the evening Aurore and I head of to one of our parks built like a amphitheatre with a stage - 'Vitabergsparken' - where we watch the 'Park theatre' and their production of 'Volpone' a play by Ben Johnson first performed in 1606. Ben Johnson was a play wright who many regard as actually being Shakespeare even if science have discussed this to and fro through decades maybe centuries.
We will be writing more about this play and many other things we have not written about the last few weeks.

We have had our first official visit from China, Hu Jintao, the president, a much talked about visit.
More about this and many other things later.

Roligetto

This was a day off for both of us.

We did not want to get burnt by the sun while staring at Stockholm Marathon.
We did some shopping instead (sun lotion!).

At the end of the day, when everything was cooler in town, we went to the Opera house to hear Rigoletto, by Giuseppe Verdi.

I, Aurore, liked the choir and the orchestra a lot.

The tenor, Tito Beltran had no voice. He was singing like Fozzie Bear in the Muppet Show. I was not impressed at all and neither was Gunnar.

The mise en scène was also very classical and very boring. 2 acts, 2 unities, many hundred occasions to fall asleep, but we did not.

Ice cream to cheer us up. And back h...

Now it's my (Gunnar's) turn: Rigoletto.
When it came to the soloists I fully agree with Aurore concerning Tito Beltran who otherwise is a very good singer.

In the rôle as Rigoletto we saw Marcus Jupither, the son of a very well known Swedish opera singer (bass singer), Rolf Jupither. I found his performance good and partly brilliant.

Lennart Forsén who was excellent and even better than the leading male singer Jupither. Forsén's bass is very smooth and deep
and at the same time powerful.

(Photo copyright: http://www.jarfallasymfoni.org/sasong2004-2005/lennart_forsen.jpg)

Katarina Leoson
as Maddalena, Sparafuciles sister was also very good.

One singer though stood above the others: Olga Mykytenko as Gilda. She was brilliant all through the opera and gave her best in every detail of her performance. Her coloratura was fantastic, her mezzo voce fantastic and when fading away in the diminuendo parts she really showed off. This was the first time she sang this rôle but it was as if she had sung it many times before and had had time to elaborate her character and her vocal performance.
She was really the big attraction of the evening!

As I didn't find any exerpts with Tito Beltran, I give you Jussi Björling: La donna è mobile:

Appartments and strange people

Svenska:

English:

I - Gunnar - work from home today but set off in the afternoon to the Swedish Film Institute were I stay for a couple of hours while Aurore works at Dfm Fiktion.

Have agreed with a woman to meet her in order to look at an appartment in a suburb called Östberga/Enskede.

We have decided to meet at five thirty and when I arrive I call her from my mobile phone (cell phone) when standing outside her house, just in order to check that she is at home. She sounds hestitating and asks me if I can call her back in thirty minutes!?

For those of you who don't know anything about this suburb (and that's the majority) I can tell you that spending half an hour there trying to do something interesting in order to kill time, is almost unbearable.
I hesitated for a while but said unfortunately yes to her proposition.
After having seen the 'central' parts of this suburb with a pizzeria, a dry cleaning store, a hair dresser, a grocery store and a kiosk, I call her back in twenty minutes.

She then tells me that the appartment is let!
I told her what I thought about her behaviour but she defended herself by saying that she had not found my telephone number as there had been so many people calling her etc....
I had spent a totally meaningless half hour of my life due to this imbecile person!

At six thirty I meet Aurore at Slussen and from there we together head off to Vårby Gård in order to look at another appartment.
This time we are somewhat late and in good time I call - as we later experience - the young man who is going to show us the appartment and tells him that instad of seven thirty we will arrive at seven forty.

When we arrive I call him but then he is in the nearby suburb Skärholmen and ask us to waite for twenty minutes (a similar story as the last one?).
We do so and when he arrives and sees us waiting he asks us in a sluggish way if we are the one's who wants to rent his flat and I say yes.
Ok, he says and continues walking. I call for his attention and reach my hand out in order to introduce myself and Aurore whereby he replied: "Ah, that's right...." and introduce himself as if this was a strange procedure - greeting each other. Directly from the caves?

He asks if it's the two of us who are going to live hear and we confirm this at which he says that he thinks this appartment is to small for us. He is not directly a 'selling person'.

When we arrive at the appartment it's situated on ground level and we don't want to live like that, with full view for all the neighbours. It also smells from damp in the appartment and it is built during the period when there were great problems of this kind.

He make complaints about Sweden and the Swedes and says he thinks it is so boring here in this country and that's why he has decided to move back to Estonia or Latvia where he comes from in order to study at a university.

Not a succesful day for finding a new appartment in other words.
Instead we did some shopping went home to dine and doing other more pleasant things!

The National Day 6th of June and Indigènes

(Photo copyright: http://skatanstankar.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/svenskaflaggan.jpg)

Svenska:

(I stället togs annandag pingsts helgdagsstatus bort.)

The National Day - became a new Public Holiday in 2005.

The Day of the Swedish Flag, the 6th of June, has been celebrated as a common flag day since 1916 and in 1983 it became the Swedish National Day. Since 2005 it is also a labour free public holiday (Instead one remowed the day after Whitsunday as previously being a labour free holiday).

The date 6th of June emanate from at least two events: King Gustaf Vasa was elected king the 6th of June 1523 and The Instrument of Government was signed the same day in 1809 (The Instrument of Government of 1974 was also signed that same day).

At the turn of the century 1800-1900 society was pervaded by nationalistic currents and discussions concerning a suitable date for a Swedish National Day started.
The current suggestions were the 6th of June, Midsummer's Eve, the death days of the kings Gustav II Adolf or Karl XII.
The supporters of Midsummer's Eve hade to give up their aim as choosing this day could lead to missunderstanding as the opponents said. This was due to the fact that the new 'flag law' that got into force after the dissolution of the union between Sweden and Norway was signed the day before Midsummer's Eve. By choosing this particular day it could be seen as if Sweden wanted to celebrate the loss of our 'brother land'.
The death day's of the kings - the 6th and 30th of November - was regarded as less suitable due to the fact that the dark and cold weather during this season would not promote the right atmosphere.

Before any decision was made, the founder of Skansen (the open air museum in Stockholm) and the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, Arthur Hazelius, decided to do something himself so in the spring of 1893, he arranged a 'Spring party' in the open air museum, a festival that lasted for several days and was concluded with the celebration of the 6th of June.
In the annual account for the Nordic Museum and Skansen, 1893-1894, Arthur Hazelius wrote: "As one of the feasts for patriotic memories, has in Skansen been introduced the 6th of June, the 'Gustaf Day', which has been celebrated and henceforth will be celebrated as the Swedish National Day"

Other festivals were arranged in Skansen in memory of historic events and cultural- historically important persons, seen as important for the Swedish 'national self-esteem' so to speak.
As other examples one can mention the commemoration of the death of king Gustaf II Adolf the 6th of November and the Bellman Day the 26th of July.
This 'festival days' were also a great source of income for Skansen.

The Celebration of Spring and the historical festivals were under a number of years recurrent events at Skansen.
The 6th of June 1895, more than two thousand flag wavering school children and thousands of 'stockholmers' marched up to Skansen in order to celebrate this day.

This tradition, located exclusively to Stockholm, continued up to the First World War when the need for a national assembling day was further reinforced. One had found that the already existing 'spring party' was a both generally accepted and suiting tradition to connect to.

The première when it comes to celebrating the 6th of June as the Day of the Swedish Flag, took place at the Stadium in Stockholm in 1916 in the presence of king Gustav V and members of the Royal Family. Stockholms Stadium was at the première only a couple of years old (built between 1910-1912 and inaugurated in 1912 at the Olympic Games in Stockholm that year) and it became a magnificent opening with parading regiments, patriotic songs, speeches and cheering.

Two years later, king Gustav V, opened the forthcoming tradition to inaugurate banners and distribute them among schools and organizations in Sweden.
For nearly 50 years this tradition (that it hade become) was carried on at the Stadium until it in 1963 continued to be celebrated at Skansen and there it has been arranged as a parallell celebration since then.

It lasted however until 1983 before the 6th of June through a change in the so called 'Flag law' also became Swedens National Day.
In 2005 it became - as mentioned above - a labour free holiday.

The Swedish Flag:
The tradition of using the flag on land in Sweden is not particularly old.
For a long time we used the national flag mainly at sea, usually 'three-tounged', like most oher nations in the world.

In 1873 one for the first time hoisted a Swedish flag at the Royal Castle, something that were met with sharp criticism, as many people meant that at flag was not sutable on land.
The royal 'example' was followed by some nobles and thereafter flagpoles were erected and flags hoisted at vicarages, railway stations and school yards and soon it became a common habit to hoist the flag.
The popularity of this custom was facilitated by the fact that one of the major publishing houses and The Board of the Day of the Swedish Flag, distributed tens of thousands of flags for free.

The flag got it's present appearance in 1906, when Sweden in connection to the disbandment of the union with Norway, got a new flag law. The 'Union sign' that had been placed in the upper square closest to the flag pole disappeared and the 'fields' got fixed proportions and range of coulors.
Yellow and Blow had before that been interpreted as any nuances at all.

Now was also decided that the 'three-tounged' flag only would be used by the Crown (the Royal Family) and the armed forces.
(This information taken from the site of Nordiska Museet/The Nordic Museum)

What did Aurore and I do this National Day?

We started of with a pique nique at Långholmen near a restaurant/café called 'Lasse i Parken' ('Lasse in the Park'). The sun glared down at us for once and it was real warm.
We had brought a baguette, water (not wine this time and we couldn't transform the water into wine like some can or could), cheese and a salad ('Dallas-salad') that we ate enjoying the beautiful weather.

After Långholmen we continued to a café (Café Gitti) to drink a cup of coffee and eat som sweats as a dessert, as the gourmandes (and gourmets) we are.

In the evening, in connection to the French Film Festival, we watch the film that according to the advertising made the French president Jacques Chirac cry when he saw it, namely 'Indigènes'.

This film tells the story of the Northafrican soldiers within the French army that served under the Second World War together with the 'ethnic' French soldiers but who were treated very bad.
This meaning that they during the war never received the same benefits as the ethnic Frenchmen and they were not treated as well as them when returning to France.
On the contrary, they were deeply discriminated both as soldiers and civilians.

Among other things these soldiers have had to fight hard to get the French government allowing them old-age pensions, something the government previously refused refering to the fact that they are Northafricans belonging in other countries but who through the war have become 'naturalized Frenchmen'.

To a great extent a moving story that maybe is of most relevance to the French and those still living among the Nortafrican soldiers and their families.

The director is Rachid Bouchareb and he is also acting in the movie.

From Cinema Sture we continued to 'Kungsträdgården' to see some of the ongoing celebration on this National Day and we there listened to a couple of songs performed by 'Melody Club'.

We terminate the day at Skeppsholmen and after that we go home.

Aurore works att Dfm Fiktion and I spend the day at the Swedish Film Institute.

In the evening we attend the French Film Festival in order to see the film 'Je ne suis la pour être aimé' by Stéphane Brizé.
This film about a man - Jean-Claude (Patrick Chesnais) - working at the Enforcement district in a small town in France is a very charming history.
Jean-Claude is divorced an leads a lonely and comparatively uneventful life and the work in itself hardly helps him sense a greater meaning in life, on the contrary (his work consists of trying to make people pay their rent and if they can't arrange with eviction).
He spend his spare time by visiting his old, surly, dissatisfied father living in an old people's home and having as his only pleasure to make complaints on everyone and everything, including his son.

Opposite Jean-Cluades appartment across the street there is a dance studio where they specialize in tango lessons and where he now and then looks, longing to participate. One day he gather courage and visit one of their classes in order to register for the course.
He now meets the young, charming Françoise who he takes a liking to.
The problem is that she is about to marry.

Today it's the 'A Taste of Stockholm'-day (1-6/6), what was earlier called 'The day of the Restaurants'.

We are given the fantastic opportunity to mingle with all the other people in Stockholm (what a privilege for them!), the vast crowd of people walking around all the market stalls with food from near and far.

In spite of the fact that all the people wanted me and Aurore to stay in Kungsträdgården (Kings Garden) we choosed to move on to Djurgården ('Tiergarden') for a walk in the sunshine and some icecream of course!

After this we went to Sundbyberg to take a look at a flat we have spotted through a site on the net called 'Blocket.se'. The appartment seemed nice and there are a whole lot of stores and other forms of services in the town (Sundbyberg is a town of its own within the municipality of Stockholm). The young russian woman letting it out seemed very nice and serious.

Now we went back to Kungsgården (as everyone asked us) for the wine tasting as we had read about. Unfortunately we came to late. Zut!

We then continued out to Skeppsholmen for some sunbathing and relaxation.

Paris je t'aime

Svenska:

English:

What happens on the gallery front today? Probably a good many things but Aurore and I start of with, what almost have become a 'regular' among galleries, namely Galleri Helle (Knudsen). Today they show some of the 'house artists' with some very interesting works we both appreciate even though we have different preferences concerning artists and their works. However we happen to be in that (un)fortunate situation that we don't have to choose as we can't afford buying them anyway - but yet....

After Helle we continue to Gallery Blås & Knåda ('Gallery Blow and Knead') on the gallery dense Hornsgatan where we saw an exhbition with a number of different artists both those we knew about and those we did not.

For those of you interested in art galleries you can find quite a few in Stockholm and not only here on the south districts of the city but in other parts as well. The impression is though that Hornsgatan is the street with the greatest amount of galleries gathered at one long stretch of the street.

After this we continue to a so called 'Vego trade fair'. As the vegetarian I am I believed that this was a fair with vegetarian food and products only dedicated us vegetarians but no...
This all takes place in a park called 'The Tessin park', a vego trade fair for meat eaters, where the visitors can taste reindeer meat (and other meat products), absolutely animal foodstuff.
This of course with the exception for the application of the word vegetarian as a friend of mine once used when we discussed why I hade become a vegetarian (something one always have to defend in front of other people!), he said: "Of course you can eat animal food, most of them are vegetarians!". The logic s'il vous plait!?

Another variant is the argument put forward by a member of the Swedish Parliament once, when discussing the breeding of animals designed to become fur. He found that this question was not one that had to be discussed from a moral standpoint. Why? "Well, the animals wear fur, so why should'nt we?" he argued! An interesting leap of logic.
Anyway, we found a lot of good things in this fair, home made jam and lemonade cultivated and produced in a biodynamic way, including environmental considerations.
When I now afterwards look up the Swedish word 'Vegomässa' I find another arrangement the same day or maybe there were vegetarian products we did not find? The mystery continues...

Now it was time for the most important thing of the day, namely the coffee break, at Thelins (Fältöversten).
From there we continue to Djurgården (Tiergarden) for a walk as it was fairly nice weahter today.

The evening ends by us seeing the film 'Paris, je t'aime' (within the framework of the ongoing French Film Festival), an oeuvre we have seen before but one that not least I - Gunnar - wanted to see again to be able to experience 'l'air de Paris'. This film consists of short stories created by a number of well known directors (The Cohen brothers, Olivier Assayas, Alexander Payne, Tom Tykwer and more) who all wanted to depict what they considered being their favourite parts of Paris. These 'pictures' are built up round a 'frame story' of more or less interesting character. A very atmosperic film in my opinion, not least if you have been there and can recognize the different parts of the city.

The science of sleep

Svenska:

Working day for Aurore at Dfm Fiktion and I spend most of the day at The Swedish Film Institute.
In the evening there is a French film again even though the official part of the French Film Festival is over. Now they repeat some older films, made one or two years ago.

This evening it's 'The science of sleep' ('La Science des rêves') by Michel Gondry, a somewhat 'twisted' story about a shy insecure young man, Stéphane (Gael Garcìa Bernal), who agrees to come to Paris in order to draw closer to his mother, Christine (Miou-Miou). He tries to find a job that suites his education but only finds a boring job at a calendar-making firm.

He falls in love with his neighbour though, Stéphanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg) but it's not so easy to conquer her in spite of her woman friend tries to get them closer to each other.
To cope with the situation he escapes into a dream world where everything can happens and also does.

First day last night: Mon meilleur ami

Svenska (English below):

Today is the first day for Aurore at her new job - Dfm Fiktion - where she is going to work as a Production Assistant. The head of the company and her 'boss' is the Film Producer Olivier Guerpillon, who also started and has been the driving force behind the French Film Festival in Stockholm.
Aurore knows him since long, not only in connection with his work at the film festival but also since the time he worked as Audio Visual Attaché at the French embassy in Stockholm.

I spend the day at The Swedish Film Instiute between twelve and five PM.

Tonight is also the closing night for the French Film Festival and I am, together with another volunteer, responsible for the evening but it's Olivier Guerpillon who introduces the film.
We serve wine and of course I spill some, who would have expected otherwise.

The film, this last evening with the friends, is 'Mon meilleur ami' ('My best friend') by Patrice Leconte with Daniel Auteuil in the leading rôle as a self-centred art dealer who at a dinner by one of his colleagues get to know that he is unable to have friends. This leads him to a bet: Within ten days he will find a friend.

The evening becomes somewhat caotic when the computer aided ticket system fail to work which leads to that some visitors are not given the chance to see the film.
Neither Aurore nor I are able to see this last film of the festival, Aurore being occupied with the film coordination and I with spilling wine.
The same thing with Joseph Redéen, responsible for the volunteers. He is also left out in the cold.
We spend most of the time talking to two young women who had pre-ordered tickets but in spite of this were prevented to see Daniel Auteuil and the others.
Emelie, the Cinema Manager, gives them two free tickets free of choice to any other film later on whenever they like to see one.
I serve them one, two and even three glass of wine to compensate for this mishap.
