Vernissage for the exhibition "Châteauroux, c'était l'Amérique" - "Châteauroux, it was America" at the exhibition hall Hôtel de Villaines in La Châtre.
The exhibition tells the history, between 1951 and 1967, when the Americans had a military base in the town of Châteauroux (37 km from us).
Their presence of course created links between the berrichons and berrichonnes (the ancient name of the people living in this region) and the Americans.
Some Americans got married to berrichonnes (and maybe American women with berrichons?) and some of the locals left Le Berry for the United States.
Some Americans stayed here.
One of the Americans who chose to stay in Le Berry, were present at the vernissage.

We were invited to a vernissage at Musée des Racines today.

This year, I, Gunnar, am not the one who runs the museum but Graciella Vieille-Mestre.

The same day we "met" a hedgehog and Aurore of course started to pat the small mammal. She adores hedgehogs!

Vattenspeglar

It had been a while since we visited Millesgården.
For the vernissage of this exhibition, the gallery hall was overcrowded.
Works of some prestigious names (Liljefors...) hang on the walls, but unfortunately the quality of these water reflections was very unequal.
We had been fooled.
Where were they, these water mirrors? In the remote fountain of this landscape? Half painted in the harbour of this or that one?
I guess we are too picky, but when we go to see Water paintings, we expect something more poetic and more skilled than what we experienced this time.
We hope that the next vernissage will surprise us in a more positive way.

Henric Aryee

Aurore and I were invited to a vernissage at the Drakens gallery in the Old Town in Stockholm tonight. Of course we went there.
Henric Aryee was the artist displaying some of his oeuvres - Aurore and Henric have worked together in a company for some time.
He has a substantial educational background from the USA among other countries.
In his works he uses different techniques even though his main interest lies in drawing.
In this exhibition we saw prints, oil and other techniques and it was really a very varied display of his art.
We were fascinated and so were many others. The vernissage was visited by many people and we enjoyed it very much!
Take a look at other pieces of art by clicking on his name above!

Headbanging

After a short shopping 'interlude', Gunnar and I go to our two regular vernissages near Södermalmstorg at Galleri Helle and Galleri Kontrast.

At Galleri Helle, some of the students of the Graphic School are exhibiting some works.

We recognize Hanna Gustavsson (21 y.o) immediately. We saw her work somewhere else before - SAK, Millesgården?
In black and white, she draws surrealistic portraits of everyday people.
They live in the suburb, buy alcohol on Fridays, watch Rickie Lake's TV program, use internet to underleaf their libido.
One of them is an angry young man sitting in a coach with a black metal t-shirt.
He looks mad, staring in front of him towards what we guees is the TV (is that Lake's fault? or Beavis and Butthead?).
He will be the key character of this day.

It might have been a tribute to Ragnar Persson, the artist who depicts with the same kind of technique the surrealistic darkness of Scandinavia and who presently has a small exhibition at Hedengrens. Who knows...

I (Gunnar) would like to add Anna Johansson Stenberg and her art, a combination between photos, drawings - some kind of collage.

I liked it very much and it reminded me to some extent of family photos on the wall in a old home in Sweden or any other country.
The photos function there as historical documents not only of the persons we know but also of old milieus, living conditions and maybe earlier unspoiled nature.

Then, Galleri Kontrast with some pictures from Northern Norway, where Russian and Ukrainian immigrants work in the mine. They live in kitsch interiors and as in Gustavsson's drawings, we experience this as a kind of surrealistic portraits.

I (Gunnar) felt very much as if these immigrants had to put up with interiors that we in the West had left behind us as being ugly or out of fashion.
This strengthens the feeling that these people are going throw the development we went through in society thirty years ago.

But let's go back to headbanging.

Direction: Opera!

The mise en scène is made by a Norwegian citizen - Olle Anders Tandberg.
As Norway is the country for Mayhem, Nattefrost or Immortal (resurrected), when the two lead characters exchange identities and use long hair postiches to embody new roles, Peter Mattei starts headbanging during some seconds.
Headbanging at the Opera! On Mozart's music! I was delighted!

I (Gunnar) think that when it comes to the performance by the singers in this production, Peter Mattei (Guglielmo, see link by his name above) was fantastic vocally and comically.
He is one of our foremost singers all categories and his baritone both has a deep and soft timbre combined with vocal strenght when needed.

Maria Fontosh (Fiordiligi) is one of my favourites among the sopranos but in this performance I where not as impressed as I have been before when hearing her sing.
I saw her in 'Eugen Onegin' and there she was tremendous sometimes reminding me of the greatest singers ever. In this performance she was very good but maybe I have to high demands on her as I fell in love with her voice immediately the first time I heard her.

Susanna Végh is also one of my favourites among singers and she sang very well though I found her performance in the last act being better than in the first.

The least interesting singers vocally where Hilde Leiland (Despina), Jonas Degerfeldt (Ferrando) and Gunnar Lundberg (Don Alfonso).

On a whole this production held high standards and I liked the mis en scène very much. The choir where excellent and also the orchestra conducted by the excellent Finnish conductor Okko Kamu.
I recommend this production to all of you.

We achieved the day with some other headbangers from Northern Europe.

On s'amuse, on pleure, on rit,

Eurovision Song Contest from Helsinki. We hear the 24 participants.
But I am waiting for something: Apocalyptica is playing during the break.
Gunnar has never heard of them, never seen them. I will have to make him listen to their tributes I keep in La Châtre.

Exhibitions, Opera, TV. Everything was under the sign of headbanging in a kitsch, surreal world.
Could it have been better? Hardly.

Anton Tjechov

Svenska:

Fotografierna visar bl.a.

English:

After The Swedish Film Institute we continue to The Finland Institute for an exhibition with photos taken at the Wasa Theatre in Finland.

The name of the exhibition was 'Pictures from the stage 1926-2006' but we couldn't figure out what differed these pictures from others taken at other theatres.

The Head of the theatre, Paul Olin, talked and he quoted, amusingly enough, a part from 'Three sisters' by Anton Tjechov, the very same play we were about to see that same evening.

On the photos we could see actress Ylva Ekblad among others, a sister to a well known and very popular Finnish-Swedish actress in Sweden, namely Stina Ekblad.
I asked Bengt Packalén, the head of the institute if there were another sister making it 'three sisters' but there is not according to him.

After this we went to National Academy of Mime and Acting to see 'Three sisters' a production with the well known director Peter Oscarsson.

To connect to the figure 'three' I for the third time saw the young actor Hannes Meidal. The first play in which I saw him acting was 'The Pelican' by August Strindberg and a play about Franz Kafka called 'Kafka' at 'The Strindberg Intimate Theatre' in Stockholm two years ago.

This night none of us were impressed by the actors and sometimes it felt like a school production and I don't mean a professional actors school like this one.
We liked the stage design very much both of us though.

In the hall we could see photos of former actors and their last performances at the school. I found the class I saw in 1981 with the former pupils, later actors:
Peter Stormare, Maria Johansson, Jessica Zandén, Sissela Kyle, Staffan Hallerstam, Roger Storm, Göran Engman, Tomas Norström, Jonna Arb, Annette Stenson, Göran Thorell and Cecilia Nilsson. Click here for a photo link showing these actors in 1981.

Helena Sandström & Annika von Hausswolff

Svenska (English below):

English:

Aurore and I felt inclined for silver today.

Therefore we visited the exhibition hall 'Contemporary Swedish Silver' (my tranlslation from 'Nutida Svenskt Silver') and an exhibition with jewellery and necklaces by Helena Sandström.

She has had exhibitions in Washington, Helsinki, Moscow and Kaliningrad. Two of her first pieces of work when she graduated from art school were bought by the National Museum of Art and the art museum Röhsska in Gothenburg.

We liked a great deal of her art and she had arranged some of it so it was hanged inside picture frames, sometimes empty and sometimes with a photo inside them.
A shawl with small silver flowers in it became one of Aurore's favourites.

From this exhbition we went on to the next, namely a photo exhibition with photos by Annika von Hausswolff an artist represented at The Museum of Modern Art among other places.
This time we got to see a series of photos depicting the artist naked with only a chainsaw as the only accessory in front of her. TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE REPRODUCTION as Aurore commented.
There where a series of photos almost looking the same with slight differences between them. In all there are more than 400 photos but at 'The Swedish General Art Society'/'Sveriges Allmänna Konstförening' (my translation) we could see about 40 of them.
We also took a look at other pieces of art. This association earlier had their premises in the same house as The Academy of Art (Fredsgatan) but they couldn't afford the rent so they moved to Linnégatan.

The films today are: 'Le amiche' by Michelangelo Antonioni a film about Clelia who arrives to her native Turin from Rome in order to set up a new fashion salon. On her first night at the hotel where she lives, a soman takes an overdose of pills and dies. Clelia now becomes involved with this woman, her life story and not least her friends Momina, Nene and Mariella and their men and ex-men. This involves love, hate and jealousy, unfaithfulness and she maybe becomes more involved than she ever wished to be. It also affects her work and future plans concerning her fashion salon, the salon becoming the scene for many settlements between her new friends.

'Secret Agent' by Alfred Hitchcock is a classical story about a novelist - 'Edgar Brodie' (John Gielgud) who is recruited by the Brittish intelligence during World War I in order to find and eliminate a German spy. As his two collaborators we find a man called 'The General' (Peter Lorre) and a 'wife', 'Elsa Carrington' (Madeleine Carroll). 'The General' is a scrupulous man who is going to help him kill the agent, while 'Elsa' is more in this for the thrill of it. In their work to eliminate the German agent they first by mistake kill the wrong man.

Vesuvius

Svenska (English below):
Under perioden 26 mars t.o.m. 8 april satsar man från Italienska Ambassaden, Italienska Kulturinstitutet, Italienska Handelskammaren och andra institutioner på att visa italiensk kultur i alla upptänkliga former runt om på olika platser i Stockholm (Italienska Kulturinstitutet, Moderna museet, Arkitekturmuseet, Nordiska Kompaniet, Nobelmuseet m.fl). Evenemanget kallas 'Panorama Italia'.

Betty Bee, Bianco Valente, Lello Lopez, Piero Golia, Giulia Piscitelli, Lorenzo Scotto Di Luzio, Marinella Senatore, Luca Mattei, Vedovamazzei, Gabriele Di Matteo.

Återkommer kanske längre fram med kommentarer kring 'A+URL'.

English:

During the period 26th of March till 8th of April there is a big concentration of Italian culture exposed in different institutions in Stockholm.

This is a venture that takes place thanks to The
Italian Cultural Institute, The Italian Embassy and many other special interest organizations.
The first time this event was arranged was in 2005 if I am correctly informed.

The institutions involved are
The Museum of Modern Art, The Architectural Museum, The Nobel Museum and the department store N.K. besides The Italian Cultural Institute.
The name of this event is
'Panorama Italia'.

Unfortunately we have missed a majority of these events Aurore and I but today we went to The Museum of Modern Art to watch some video films made by some artistst from Neapels (Napoli).
The artists participating in this film where the following:
Betty Bee, Bianco Valente, Lello Lopez, Piero Golia, Giulia Piscitelli, Lorenzo Scotto Di Luzio, Marinella Senatore, Luca Mattei, Vedovamazzei, Gabriele Di Matteo. We only had time to see a short part of one of these films.

It tells the story about an artist - unfortunately I do not remember his name - who decides to 'disappear' in connection to a vernissage in the USA and shortly before a seminar in Copenhagen to which he is invited.
He tries to leave the country (USA) without leaving any trace and this becomes quite interesting if we consider how difficult it is to 'disappear' in the global 'surveillance-society' we are all a part of, particularly in the Western world.

In this film we listen to interviews with colleagues to the 'lost' artist, police and many others who discuss his idea and project from different angles.

After this Aurore and I cross the entrance to visit
The Swedish Museum of Architecture for a vernissage with the architecture 'collective' called 'Urban Research Laboratory', abbreviated 'URL'.
This project started in 1999 as a two year programme at the School of Architecture at the
Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
In 2003 it was developed into a independent organization consisting of an architectural office with a network of members both in and outside Sweden. Within the framework of this project one tries to find out how the urban room ought, must or should look like in a future characterized by environmental catastrophies, lack of water and the decline of our finit recources.
Can cities really grow continuesly during these circumstances and what is the rôle of architecture in this scenario?
Could architecture contribute to a solution to these problems?
Those are the questions discussed during the following seminar.

We did not have time to attend the seminar though and the information concerning this exhibition was not yet fully developed.

The Ipcress File

Svenska (English below):

English:

We start with a vernissage at the Millesgården and a exhibition with art by Ann Eholm and Håkan Rehnberg. We arrive to early to be served wine - wine of course always being half the pleasure at vernissage/exhibitions - but the official opening is at three o'clock.

For Ann Edholm, painting has always been in the center of her artistery and her paintings somewhat reminds me partly of a Swedish painter - Olle Baertling - and partly of Malevitj. The measurements is very important for her and there is almost a 'short circuit' between symbolism and physical expression.

Håkan Rehnberg is moving between painting and physical objects with symbolic values. The scale is very important for him in his art.
We found some of these pieces of art interesting and some paintings on glass were like tapestry but on the whole it left no marks in our souls

After this: 'The Ipcress Files' by director Sidney J Furie with Michael Caine in the leading rôle ("grrrrrrrr...." as Aurore snarls when she sees him). (Trailer above)

Some leading Western scientists have been kidnapped but only a few days after they disappears the reappear again. One problem though:
They have lost their memory and do not remember anything of their scientific work.
The British now send one of their agents - Harry Palmer (Caine) to investigate what has happened to them. His boss sends him to another department within the organization and he gets a new boss as boring and stiff as the other or even more.
As Palmer is regarded as a 'bad boy' when it comes to his reputation in the organization he does not get along to well with his more 'properly' behaving superiors.
Palmer finds out that there is a leak within the secret agent organization and now tries to find out who the traitor is.
An entertaining and sometime thrilling - in a kind way - film with humour. Somewhat like a James Bond story with less 'glamour'.

Next film: 'L'intouchable' by Benoît Jacquot (trailer below).
This film starts with a mother who slaps her grown up daughter in the face and when the daughter flees she calls her back and we get to know the reason for their argument.
Jeanne - Isild Le Besco - wants to know who her father is and she knows her mother has had a relationship with an Indian man belonging to lowest cast in India - the untouchables.
She embarks on a journey trying to find her father and in this search after him she finds out a lot about the Indian society, things she didn't know before. She also gets to know some of his relatives and is invited to a wedding.
She never talks to her father but she sees him when he is working as a teacher in a secondary school.
Not all untouchables are poor outcasts. Some of them have decent jobs and even education.
This story could have become more interesting because of the theme and content is thought-provoking and it could have been told in a more profound way than was the case.

Cowards bend the knee

Svenska (English below):

English:

This movie - 'Cowards bend the knee' - is to some parts a story of a hockey player who gets involved in another game than hockey, a game of relations, revenge and murder.

A frightened daughter to a father who has been murdered want's her father's death revenged. The perpretator of this murder is her mother or is it?
The movie includes 'perverse' sexuality (if one want to use that word) and different forms of psychoses. It's shot in black and white and it's a silent movie, as often with Guy Maddin.
Maddin also uses pictures from his childhood as the barbershop, the hockey players etc.
It's in many respects an unusual film but taking in consideration that it's Maddin who have made it, it still feels relatively ordinary in it's narrative style.

After this we continue to the Finland Institute (Finlandsinstitutet) for a vernissage with sculptures by the Finnish artist Tommi Toija and the exhibition named 'A strange world'.
These sculptures are both 'realistic' and absurd in their shape and they express different kinds of psychological states of mind, sometimes commented through the title of the work.

By chance I meet the wife of one of my cousin's - Satu. She is married to my oldest cousin Lars. They are both artists and have since decades lived in Järna working within the Anthroposophical movement there and schools connected to this organization.
They have six children of whom all are adults. Two daughters live in Paris, another son or daughter in Spain and one in Greece. One of their children still live at home.
I haven't met them since 1997 and before that I can't even remember when.

I have a link - 'Satu's homepage' - where you can see some of her paintings and later on maybe some of Lars'.

Jussi Ojala, Marianne Lindberg De Geer, Carl Johan De Geer & K.G. Nilsson

Svenska (English below):

Intressant.

English:

First of all we start with a gallery called 'Konsthantverkarna' where we look at a vernissage with works by the Finnish artist Jussi Ojala with the theme 'From Control to Chaos'.

He works with ceramics and in this exhibition he has made 'flower pots' or 'vases' in the shape of cut off tree trunks. Interesting. Besides his art there are works of other artists exhibited too, using all kinds of material. The pieces of art can also be used and are made like every day articles if you can afford them.

Adjacent to this gallery there is another one called 'Gallery Helle Knudsen' where there is a vernissage with art from the more well known artists Marianne De Geer-Lindberg, Carl Johan De Geer (IMDb on Carl Johan De Geer), Ann Makander and K.G. Nilsson among others.

There are few works displayed but although I have seen these artists before I have never seen the pieces of art displayed here today. Aurore very much liked the works by Marianne De Geer-Lindberg. So did I, but also some of the works by Ann Makander.

After this we set out towards The Academy Book Store where a well known Swedish linguist - Fredrik Lindström - and his brother(?) Henrik is going to talk about there book 'The Fall of Svitjod and the Birth of Sweden' (my translation).
This book tells - or try to tell - the story about how the loosely 'merged' country called Svitjod became the Sweden we know today, why Stockholm became the capital instead of one of the influential cities on the West coast or Uppsala.

We conclude the day at the Cinematheque by watching the films 'The Silence of the Lambs' by Jonathan Demme, a film that needs no presentation and 'Careful' by Guy Maddin.

Maddin is a very special film maker.
His themes are a combination between more or less reality based stories and 'sagas', stories resembling them made up by the brothers Grimm for example.
He is very interesting and personal in his realisation of his visions and for those of you who are cinephiles, I warmly recommend him.
