En liten tur till Hedengrens bokhandelär alltid upplyftande för själ och intellekt. Det är få butiker där jag - Gunnar - har tålamod att spendera någon längre tid men när det gäller bokhandlar, skivbutiker, antikvariat, butiker som säljer filmer, då kan jag spendera flera timmar om så vore. Hedengrens är en sådan plats.
Det vi kommer dit för att se är en liten mini-utställning (kanske en tautologi med uttrycket 'liten mini'-utställning?) med verk av konstnären Ragnar Persson som vi tidigare sett i andra sammanhang. Här försäljes också hans bok 'Napalm of Death' för 298:- för dem av er som är intresserade. Teckningarna är inte många och vissa av dem har vi sett förut men för dem som ej sett Persson rekommenderar jag ett besök på Hedengrens.
Det kan jag f.ö. rekommendera ändå för dem av er som sällan eller aldrig varit där. Ett tempel för bibliofiler.
På kvällen är det Fransk Filmfestival igen och denna kväll ges filmen 'L'esquive' eller 'Kärlekslekar' som den heter på svenska (trailer nedan). Denna film har både jag och Aurore sett tidigare och den ingår i serien 'Hur står det till med Frankrike egentligen?'.
Denna film speglar ett antal ungdomar i den parisiska förorten och det kretsar fr.a. kring en ung man - Krimo - och en ung kvinna - Lydia - där förstnämnde är förälskad i Lydia men alltför blyg för att närma sig henne. Hon är i full färd med att repetera ett äldre klassiskt teaterstycke som hon tillsammans med ett antal andra ungdomar skall framföra. Krimo ber den manlige huvudrollsinnehavaren att få ta hans roll och detta genom att muta honom med prylar som han har i sin källare. Detta för att härigenom komma Lydia närmare. Det uppstår en rad konflikter på vägen och ungdomarna drabbar även samman med polis där aggressioner kommer till ytan från båda parter.
En mycket sevärd film där alla skådespelare är amatörer vilket är värt att nämnas då deras prestationer är så trovärdiga att ingen skådespelare kunnat ha gjort detta bättre.

A small trip to Hedengren's bookstoreis always uplifting for soul and intellect. There are few stores where I - Gunnar - have the patience to spend any longer time but when it comes to bookstores, record stores and stores that sell films I am able to stay for hours. Hedengren's is such a place.
What we arrive to see is a small exhibition with works by artist Ragnar Persson, whom we have seen before in other contexts, at museums and the like. They also sell his book 'Napalm of Death'.
The drawings are few and some of them we have seen before but for those of you who is not acquainted with him I recommend a visit. I recommend a visit at Hedengren's anyhow. It's a temple (measuring with Swedish standards) and the staff is very competent.
In the evening it is The French Film Festivalagain and the film tonight is 'L'esquive' by Abdellatif Kechiche. Aurore and I have seen it before and it's a part of the series at the festival called 'How is things in France, actually?'.
This film reflects a group of young people living in the suburbs of Paris and focus particularly on a young man - Krimo - and a young woman - Lydia - where the former is in love with the latter but to shy to approach her. She is busy rehearsing an older play that she and some other young people are going to perform at some event. Krimo asks the male who is playing the leading rôle if he can switch place with him and in order to persuade him he bribes him with gadgets he has hidden in the basement. This so that Krimo can get a good alibi to get closer to Lydia. A remarkable film and even more remarkable if one consider that all the actors are amateurs and their acting is far better than anything professional actors could have achieved.

Idag är det söndag men Aurore och jag har de senaste två söndagarna ej besökt någon gudstjänst någonstans, vi ogudaktiga! Nåväl Aurore är en ängel och jag är ju född på ärkeängeln Mikaels dag så det ordnar sig nog ändå.
Istället tar vi oss till ett annat tempel, nämligen Kulturhuset.
Hon tillhör - enligt informationen - en konstnärsgeneration som bearbetar den afrikanska självbilden. Man kan dock fråga sig om det överhuvud finns en 'afrikansk självbild' med tanke på att Afrika är en kontinent bestående av en rad olika länder med flera hundra miljoner invånare, olika kulturell och historisk bakgrund etc. Detta erinrar jag mig att curatorn för 'Africa Remix' Simon Njami diskuterade vid ett seminarium på Franska institutet för flera månader sedan.
Essamba vill dock i sina bilder skildra hur det är att vara svart, kvinna och fotograf.
I Paris har hon studerat filosofi och dans varefter hon flyttade vidare till Amsterdam för att vidareutbilda sig och där etalberade hon sig som fotograf.
Om bilderna kan sägas ha klargjort något rörande den afrikanska identiteten vet jag ej men jag upplevde dock ett stort mått av skönhet och originalitet i bilderna.
Ett foto visar en svart kvinnas - konstnären själv om jag inte missminner mig - med en vit persons händer i vilka hon lutar sitt ansikte på ett sätt som gör att det ser ut som om hon lutar huvudet i sina egna händer.
Hon arbetar mycket med kontraster och likheter mellan människor samt mellan människa och objekt. Alla foton i svart vitt.
Efter detta blir det klimatförändringarna som till del upptar vår tid.
På Gallerian vid Hamngatan har man iordningsställt ett antal små enheter som på olika sätt visar upp klimatförändringarnas inverkan på jordklotet men fr.a. på Stockholm under vissa förutsättningar. Utställningen heter 'Effektsthlm'.
Från klimatet till valthornet är steget inte långt.
Vi beger oss till SAMI:s (Svenska Artisters och Musikers Intresseorganisation) på Döbelnsgatan där en ung valthornist - Magnus Westerberg - skall spela ett antal stycken dels solo dels tillsammans med pianist dels i en stråkkvintett samt i en ensemble med andra blåsare.
Som jag förstod det - utan att vara expert på valthornet som instrument - var detta stycke tekniskt mycket svårt och jag upplevde inte att Westerberg riktigt bemästrade detsamma utan en del ganska hörbara misstag gjordes från hans sida.
Efter detta spelade han 'Sonate till Hermann Baumann' (för solohorn) av Vitaly Buyanovsky och även här gjordes en del ganska flagranta misstag som jag upplevde det.
Inte så att Westerberg inte hade en vacker ton i sitt instrument men återigen kändes det som om stycket var en aning för avancerat inte minst då man spelar solo och inte kan 'gömma sig' bakom andra instrumentgrupper.
Nu tycktes det dock som om han kommit in i en fas då detta påverkade honom negativt för även i de två sista styckena, 'Consert-trio för klarinett, horn och fagott' av Bernard Crusellsamt 'Kvintett i Ess-dur KV 407' av W.A. Mozartspelade han hörbart fel vid några tillfällen.
Ofta är det så att om man kommer fel inledningsvis - och detta känner jag igen från den tiden då jag själv sjöng offentligt - kan tankarna börja kretsa mer kring felen än kring framförandet i sin helhet.
I publiken satt - om jag såg rätt - Ib Lansky-Otto, en av Sveriges genom tiderna kanske främsta valthornister även internationellt erkänd.
Kvällen avslutas med Franska filmfestivalenoch filmen 'Palais Royal'('Kungliga familjen') av Valérie Lemercier med Catherine Deneuvei en av huvudrollerna.Filmen handlar om att Frankrike har fått ett kungahus i vilket den gamle kungen dör och skall efterträdas av äldsten sonen. Av skilda skäl anser man honom dock ej lämplig bl.a. då han inte har en fru vilken kan garantera efterkommande. Den yngre sonen blir istället utsedd till kung, något denne inte alls är beredd på och inte heller hans hustru. De skall nu försöka axla detta ansvar och från att ha varit ett par som tyckt om att festa, roa sig och dagligen umgås med sina vänner, får de nu ta ansvar för en rad olika officiella uppdrag med varierande resultat.
En underhållande komedi med många poänger där man kunde se influenser från olika kungahus i porträtteringen av famljemedlemmarna.

Today it's Sunday but Aurore and I have not visited any church the last two weeks, oh heathens! Well Aurore is a little angel and I am born on the day of the archangel Michael so I think we will be allright anyway.
Instead we visit another 'temple', the Cultural Center - 'Kulturhuset'.
Here they display a photo exhibition with photos by Angèle Etoundi Essambaborn in Kamerun in 1962. She is - according to the information - a part of a generation of artists who work on the African self image.
One can of course ask oneself if there exists an 'African self image' considering Africa being a continent consisting of different countries with many millions of people, different cultural and historical background etc.
Essamba wants however to depict who it is like to be black, woman and photographer. She studied philosophy and dance in Paris whereafter she mowed to Amsterdam to educate herself further and established as a photographer.
If the photos could have been said to clarify anything concerning the African identity is hard to say but I found the photos full of beauty and originality.
One photo for example shows a black woman - the artist if I remember correctly - with white hands in which she leans her head.
She works a lot with contrasts and similarities between people and between people and objects. All the photos in black and white.
After this the climate changes take up some of our time. At the so called 'Gallery' ('Gallerian' - a shoppingcenter) in city (Hamngatan) a group of scientists or students have put together a small exhibition consisting of small units where they display different aspects of how the environmental changes during certain conditions, affects the earth and particularly Stockholm. 'Effektsthlm' is the name of this project.
From climate changes to the horn the step is not so big.
We visit SAMI(Swedish Artists' and Musicians' Interest Organization) where a young hornist - Magnus Westerberg - will perform some pieces partly solo and partly together with a group of musicians. He starts of with a piece called 'Rêverie' by Alexander Glasunovto piano accompaniment by professor Katarina Ström-Harg. From what I could understand without being an expert at the horn as a instrument, was that this piece was technically very difficult to play and I felt that Westerberg not quite where able to master it.
After this he played 'Sonate to Hermann Baumann' for solo horn by Vitaly Buyanovskyand also here we noticed some flagrant mistakes. Not that Westerberg did not have a nice tone in his instrument but again it felt as if the piece where somewhat to advanced for him and not least when one plays solo without being able to 'lean on' other musicians.
Now it seemed as if he had reached a phase in the concert where these mistakes affected him negatively because also in the last pieces of music he performed - 'Concert-trio for clarinet, horn and bassoon' by Bernard Cruselland 'Quintet in E-flat major KV 407' by W. A. Mozarthe made som audible mistakes.
I remember from the time when I sang in public that once the mistakes is made in the beginning of a concert, it's easy to become concentrated on the mistakes rather than on the performance at a whole. In the audience I think I saw Ib Lansky-Otto, one of Swedens foremost hornists of all times(?)internationally renowned.
The evening ends with the French Film Festivaland the film 'Palais Royal'('The Royal Family') by Valérie Lemercierwith Catherine Deneuvein one of the leading rôles. The film tells the story of France as a monarchy where the old king dies and is supposed to be succeded by the oldest son. From different reasons though they find him unsuitable; he doesn't have a wife for example and this precludes an heir. The younger son is instead appointed king, something he is not at all prepared for and neither is his wife. They now try to shoulder this burden and from being a couple who liked going to parties, have fun and spend time with good friends all thay long, they now have to take on the responsibilities of a king and queen with official assignements and this with varying results. A entertaining story where the influences from different European royal families could easily be detected.
After a short shopping 'interlude', Gunnar and I go to our two regular vernissages near Södermalmstorg at Galleri Helleand Galleri Kontrast.
At Galleri Helle, some of the students of the Graphic School are exhibiting some works.
We recognize Hanna Gustavsson(21 y.o) immediately. We saw her work somewhere else before - SAK, Millesgården? In black and white, she draws surrealistic portraits of everyday people. They live in the suburb, buy alcohol on Fridays, watch Rickie Lake's TV program, use internet to underleaf their libido. One of them is an angry young man sitting in a coach with a black metal t-shirt. He looks mad, staring in front of him towards what we guees is the TV (is that Lake's fault? or Beavis and Butthead?). He will be the key character of this day.
It might have been a tribute to Ragnar Persson, the artist who depicts with the same kind of technique the surrealistic darkness of Scandinavia and who presently has a small exhibition at Hedengrens. Who knows...
I (Gunnar) would like to add Anna Johansson Stenbergand her art, a combination between photos, drawings - some kind of collage.
I liked it very much and it reminded me to some extent of family photos on the wall in a old home in Sweden or any other country. The photos function there as historical documents not only of the persons we know but also of old milieus, living conditions and maybe earlier unspoiled nature.
Then, Galleri Kontrast with some pictures from Northern Norway, where Russian and Ukrainian immigrants work in the mine. They live in kitsch interiors and as in Gustavsson's drawings, we experience this as a kind of surrealistic portraits.
I (Gunnar) felt very much as if these immigrants had to put up with interiors that we in the West had left behind us as being ugly or out of fashion. This strengthens the feeling that these people are going throw the development we went through in society thirty years ago.
The mise en scène is made by a Norwegian citizen - Olle Anders Tandberg. As Norway is the country for Mayhem, Nattefrost or Immortal (resurrected), when the two lead characters exchange identities and use long hair postiches to embody new roles, Peter Matteistarts headbanging during some seconds. Headbanging at the Opera! On Mozart's music! I was delighted!
I (Gunnar) think that when it comes to the performance by the singers in this production, Peter Mattei (Guglielmo, see link by his name above) was fantastic vocally and comically. He is one of our foremost singers all categories and his baritone both has a deep and soft timbre combined with vocal strenght when needed.
Maria Fontosh(Fiordiligi) is one of my favourites among the sopranos but in this performance I where not as impressed as I have been before when hearing her sing. I saw her in 'Eugen Onegin' and there she was tremendous sometimes reminding me of the greatest singers ever. In this performance she was very good but maybe I have to high demands on her as I fell in love with her voice immediately the first time I heard her.
Susanna Véghis also one of my favourites among singers and she sang very well though I found her performance in the last act being better than in the first.
On a whole this production held high standards and I liked the mis en scène very much. The choir where excellent and also the orchestra conducted by the excellent Finnish conductor Okko Kamu. I recommend this production to all of you.
We achieved the day with some other headbangers from Northern Europe.

Eurovision Song Contestfrom Helsinki. We hear the 24 participants. But I am waiting for something: Apocalyptica is playing during the break. Gunnar has never heard of them, never seen them. I will have to make him listen to their tributes I keep in La Châtre.
Exhibitions, Opera, TV. Everything was under the sign of headbanging in a kitsch, surreal world. Could it have been better? Hardly.

Efter det att Aurore och jag genomfört vår dagliga sejour till Filmhuset beger jag mig till Café 60 på Sveavägen för att träffa en god vän, en sjuksköterska jag arbetat tillsammans med på både Huddinge och S:t Görans sjukhus. Vi tillhörde dem som arbetade både dag och natt men kom genom detta att lära känna varandra ganska väl eftersom vi möttes både vid det ena och det andra sjukhuset olika tider på dygnet. Vi har upprätthållit kontakten även sedan jag slutade arbeta inom vården och vi sitter nu ned några timmar för att prata om allt möjligt. Detta då hon även läst och undervisat litteratur samt är intresserad av film och musik bland mycket annat. Trevligt!
Efter detta blir det Franska filmfestivalenoch kvällens film 'Mauvaise foi'eller 'Fel tro' som den heter på svenska regisserad av Roschdy Zemsom också spelar en av de två huvudrollerna. Som titeln anger skildrar den konflikten som uppstår mellan - i detta fall - föräldrarna till ett ungt par som råkar ha olika kulturell och religiös bakgrund, en judisk kvinna med två troende föräldrar, en arabisk man med en mor som i grunden är muslim.
Detta blir lite av en parafras självfallet på 'Romeo och Julia' eller West Side Story och vi känner igen historien i de filmer som i England kom att produceras under 90-talet där frågor om etnicitet och vad olika kulturer och trossystem betyder i relationerna människor emellan speglades i spelfilmens form.
I det stora hela är filmen mycket sevärd med en del komiska poänger men det alltför rosenröda slutet där alla levde lyckliga i alla sina dagar.... drar ned betyget en aning. Detta är Roschdy Zem's regidebut och som sådan mycket lovande.
We belonged to those in the staff who worked both night and day (You can sing the song if you like) and came hereby to know each other quite well as we met at both hospitals at different times and hours of the day. We have maintained the contact after I finished working within health service and we now sit down for a couple of hours talking about almost everything.
This as she also have studied and teached litterature, likes film and music among other things.
After this the French Film Festivaland the film 'Mauvaise foi'('Wrong faith', my translation) directed by Roschdy Zemwho also acts in one of the two main rôles. As the title suggest, it depicts the conflict between - in this case - the parents of a young couple from coming from different cultural and religious background, a Jewish woman with two believing parents and an Arab man with a mother who is a Muslim.
This becomes of course a paraphrase of 'Romeo and Juliet' or 'West Side Story' and we recognize the theme from Brittish films made in the 1990's where questions concerning ethnicity and what different cultures and belief systems means in the relationsship between people where discussed on film.
On the whole though it's a film worth seeing with a great deal of comic punch lines but the all to happy end does bring the marks down to some extent.
This is the debut for Zem as a director and as such a very promising one.

Idag är det Aurore's mors namnsdag - Solange - och vi gratulerar via nätet. Solange betyder bl.a. 'Högtidlig' och idag är det härigenom en högtid som vi firar!
Efter ett antal timmar på Filmhuset beger sig Aurore och jag till Berwaldhallendär vi innan kvällens konsert lyssnar på författaren Ernst Brunner(presentation av Brunner på Bonniers förlags hemsida) som berättar om två av sina böcker, dels 'Carolus Rex'('Carolus Rex' på Bokus hemsida) om Karl XII samt 'Fukta din aska'('Fukta din aska' på Bokus hemsida) om Carl Michael Bellman. Den senare har jag läst.
Brunner redogör för en del anekdoter vilka finns beskrivna i dessa böcker och för mig utgör berättelserna ur boken om Karl XII de intressantaste eftersom jag inte läst denna.
Uppskattade däremot mycket hans bok om Bellman som ger en i många stycken mångskiftande beskrivning av Bellman som person. Ämbetsmannen, suputen, kompositören, sångaren och skämtaren.
Kvällens konsert med Radiosymfonikerna innehåller tre delar.
Konserten inleds med ett nyskrivet stycke av den norsk-svenske kompositören Björn Wilho Hallberg -'L'Isola', ett stycke både Aurore och jag uppskattade. Tonsättaren själv kom upp på scenen för att ta emot ovationerna.
Hallberg blev i slutet av 70-talet mycket omtalad då man på Kungliga Operan i Stockholm satte upp hans opera 'Josef'. Detta då det i en scen sker en 'våldtäkt' av Maria, Jesu moder, där en centurion eller åtminstone en romersk soldat gör sig skyldig till detta övergrepp.
Diskussionerna efter föreställningen kretsade nästan helt kring denna scen varvid det rent musikaliska nästintill försvann i recensionerna.
Jag erinrar mig detta väl eftersom jag vid tillfället 'pryade' på Operan under mina gymnasiestudier. Avhörde och såg generealrepetionen av denna opera men den omtalade scenen sker bakom höga balkar som skjuter upp ur golvet och endast musiken avslöjar att det sker något dramatiskt i denna scen.
Efter detta framförs ett nyskrivet verk av Anders Hillborg'Lontana in Sono' där mezzosopranen Malena Ernmanär solist. Stycket i sig tyckte vi om men jag kände inte att Erman kunde göra det rättvisa rent vokalt. Upplevde det som om hon sjöng mezzo voce under hela framförandet. Kanske skulle det sjungas så, alternativt att hon inte hade en bra kväll eller så sparade hon sig inför morgondagens direktsändning i radio.
Kvällen avslutades med ett mer 'klassiskt' stycke om man kan kalla det så, nämligen Carl Nielsen's symfoni nr 4 med kvällens dirigent Johannes Gustavssonvid pulten.
Efter konserten blir det bio Sture och filmen 'La tourneuse de page'ytterligare en gång inom ramen för Franska filmfestivalen.

Today it's Aurore's mothers name's day - Solange- and we congratulate her through 'the net'. Solange means solemn among other things.
After a couple of hours at the Swedish Film Institute Aurore and I continue to Berwald Concert Hall or 'Berwaldhallen' as we call it in Sweden for a concert with The Swedish Radio Orchestraand a soloist.
Before the concert we listen to one of Swedens more renowned authors, Ernst Brunner who talks around two of his books, namely 'Carolus Rex' a book about the Swedish king Karl XII and 'Moisten your ashes' (my translation from Swedish 'Fukta din aska') about poet and troubadour Carl Michael Bellman. The latter I have read but not the one about king Karl XII.
Brunner gives an account of stories mentioned in these books and for me the stories from the book about Karl XII are the most interesting ones as I haven't read it. I enjoyed thought very much his book about Bellman in which he gives a diversified picture of Bellman as a person, the official, the drunkard, composer, singer and joker.
The concert tonight contains three parts. The first one consists of a newly written piece by the Norwegian-Swedish composer Björn Wilho Hallberg - 'L'Isola'- a piece of music we both - Aurore and I - liked. The composer came up on stage to receive the ovations.
Hallberg became very talked about in the late 1970:s in Stockholm when his opera 'Josef' was set up at The Royal Opera House here. This because it contains a 'rape scene' where Maria, the mother of Jesus, is said to be raped by a centurion or at least a Roman soldier. The discussions after this performance was almost totally centred around this scene whereby the musical parts where discussed within smaller headlines, so to speak. I remember this well as I was doing a so called practical vocational orientation at the Opera during my studies at upper secondary school. I attended the dress rehearsal and the famous scene is not at all exposed but everything is hidden behind high floor walls coming up from the floor and concealing everything. Only the music reveals that there is something dramatic going on.
After the piece by Hallberg, another newly written piece of music by the Swedish composer Anders Hillborg, 'Lontana in Sono', with mezzo soprano Malena Ernmanas a soloist. I did not find however that she was able to do this piece of music justic, vocally. It appeared as if she constantly sang mezzo voce and the dynamique within the vocal part in the piece in this way dissapeared according to me. I don't know if she had a bad day or if she tried to hold back a little before the radio transmission tomorrow or if the vocal part was meant to sound like this. The piece was musically appealing though.
